Ōtautahi Christchurch’s ‘gathering place’

Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre has been designed as Ōtautahi Christchurch’s ‘gathering place’. An architectural and social landmark designed as a welcoming heart in the centre of the city.

An integral part of the regeneration of Ōtautahi, Te Pae is set to act as a catalyst, not only for growth and development of the city, but as a way of building lasting social, cultural and economic connections between the region and the world.

This world-class venue has been meticulously designed with a considered focus on purpose-built solutions to support a full range of event requirements. This includes a 1,400 seat tiered auditorium that can be divided into two 700-seat venues.

Europlan’s South Island Project Manager, Paul Clucas, was the project lead for the delivery and installation of the custom-made seating for this this 1,400-capacity auditorium space.

Project Management

Paul worked alongside Project Management company CPB, Architect Woods Bagot and Te Pae directly, to successfully delver and install the auditorium seating over a four-week timeframe. The project featured unique complexities that Paul skillfully navigated with his team.

The delivery and installation took place during a Covid lockdown which meant we had to work around travel restrictions for our Auckland staff who made up part of the install team. It also meant that other trades and works on site were affected and this required total agility from Paul and the team to scale hours and workflow to meet the regular changes to the project scheduling.

Project Delivery
Project updates and communications were generated out of Australia for a large portion of the installation period, so we tailored working hours accordingly to manage the time difference and keep to the project timeline.

Paul worked very closely with the team at CPB to navigate the work being done by other trades on site and taking place overhead. Being an auditorium space meant that technology, ceiling features and fixtures and acoustic treatments were all being installed above the seating, and at the same time. Paul structured the project plan around these works to ensure we protected the seats from any accidental damage and still hit the milestones to complete the project on time.

Project Solution

The seating itself is a custom-made auditorium solution from Poltrona Frau in Italy and is part of the Haworth Collection.

For nearly 100 years, Poltrona Frau has been designing and manufacturing custom interior furniture solutions for public spaces, working with internationally renowned architects on world class projects including museums, theatres, auditoriums, cinemas, airports, showrooms, hotels, offices and restaurants. It’s their detailed creativity and experience blended with specific attention to the unique characteristics of these environments that has seen Poltrona Frau deliver high level and extraordinary projects all over the globe. Each of them displaying the taste and elegance that the Poltrona Frau brand is famous for.

Project Outcomes
Paul was involved in regular project meetings with Haworth in Australia and Poltrona Frau in Italy to provide updates and acted as a relationship conduit between Poltrona Frau, Haworth and Te Pae. Expertly linking all critical pieces of the supply chain together to ensure project communication was timely and accurate.

Paul and his team delivered above and beyond on this project and deftly handled the unique scope of this epic installation. The result is a world class and well-presented auditorium and events space that the team from Te Pae and Woods Bagot are thrilled with.

"I don’t want to deal with a sales rep, I want to deal with a relationship manager who has a genuine interest in our organisation and who sees value to me in offering solutions, not value in it for themselves. That’s Europlan."
