Overlooking the Hauraki Gulf, The Sunderland Hangar was built in 1939 by Tasman Empire Airways Ltd (TEAL) for its new Trans-Tasman sea planes.
At the time of its construction, The Hangar used a state-of-the-art and lightweight steel roof truss system, leaving the interior free of supporting posts to accommodate large planes. It delivered a massive ceiling height of 27m!
Today The Hangar has been developed by Willis Bond & Co and master planned by Cheshire Architects, as part of a multi-stage masterplan for the redevelopment of Catalina Bay.
The Hangar forms part of the first stage of works and is one of seven existing air force buildings being refurbished into a mixture of hospitality,
commercial, office and retail offerings and a new home for the popular Farmers Market.
Willis Bond & Co engaged with Europlan at a very early stage in the project development. Our well-known expertise in delivering coworking spaces allowed us to act as an industry advisor and source of knowledge at inception.
Our brief was to assist with the furniture specification to create a vibrant and functional co-working space, while using colours and finishes that complement the character and steel elements of the building.
The first stage provided a suite of 75 work points with the option to add more as the space flexes. It was important to provide furniture that was suitable for a coworking application. We focused on solutions that were flexible and added a mobile element to the space, to support the agile nature of a coworking environment.
We selected above the desk soft wiring, lockers with digital locks and a future-proofed desking system. Folding mobile tables for boardroom and meeting settings allow spaces to be configured by users to suit individual needs.
These solutions also deliver a low admin aspect to the ongoing operation of the coworking space. Digital locks do away with the need to provide keys or padlocks and a master code allows the community team to easily manage access and availability of personal storage for residents.
Folding mobile tables can be deployed and set up by a single user and adding to the existing desking is easy due to the kit of parts design of the Intuity system.
