Tōtara Haumaru (The Sheltering Tōtara) is Aotearoa New Zealand’s newest hospital facility and the largest development at North Shore Hospital in 50 years.
This 150-bed, 19,600sqm+ regional healthcare hub completed for Te Whatu Ora Waitematā is designed to serve the needs of the country’s fast-growing and ageing northern population.
The four-storey hospital building, on Auckland’s North Shore Hospital campus puts patient and whānau-centred design at the forefront and is focused on a modern approach to healthcare for an enriched experience for patients and visitors.

Project Vision
Key Elements
The cornerstone of this programme was the purpose built four-storey hospital building Tōtara Haumaru, which features a Jurassic Park like interior healing garden and courtyard. This space is designed to support wellbeing and provide a place of respite for patients, visitors and staff using intelligent and carefully considered biophilic elements.
The project also included major works and upgrades to the water, gas and power infrastructure, ensuring these services are resilient enough to support the hospital for the next 30 years, serving the Auckland and Northland communities well into the future.
Project Delivery
Europlan was selected as the preferred supplier for all non-clinical furniture along with the procurement of specialist medical furniture.
A key factor to being awarded this contract was our extensive experience working in healthcare environments and our proven project management methodology. We could partner with Te Whatu Ora on this journey and bring our capability to procure, deliver and install a large-scale project, anticipating the unique needs of this sector.
Tōtara Haumaru also included two Well Foundation projects, the design and delivery of New Zealand’s first large-scale indoor healing garden and multifunctional whānau rooms. These inclusive spaces were pivotal to the success of the environment, providing restorative and welcome comfort areas for families and visitors. These were two additional projects and Europlan was able to help procure specialist solutions within budget and supply them on time.
Project Management
Europlan worked closely with Inovo Project Management and Te Whatu Ora to deliver this contract. We had regular meetings with key stakeholders to plan staged and scaled deliveries to site, working around live construction and site works. Delays on site meant we reconfigured delivery programmes and used our logistics facilities to hold product and where possible, worked with our suppliers to change manufacturing lead times in line with new delivery dates. All standard practice for our highly skilled project management team.
