A world-class furniture fit out for collaborative, social, teaching and learning spaces.

In January 2023, Europlan completed a world-class furniture fit out for the collaborative, social, teaching and learning spaces at the Science & Innovation
Complex at Massey University Albany Campus The project began with the presentation of concepts and ideas in April 2020.

This turned into a unique collaborative experience between Athfield Architects, Massey and Europlan kicking off with digital whiteboards from lounges at home during lockdown. The use of technology was critical in the early planning stages of the brief, including facetime calls to go over fabrics and finishes.

This whole team wrap around approach ensured that the foundations laid in the design phase paved the way for a robust RFP process that took place in
May 2021.

Europlan were successfully awarded the furniture supply for the “Collaboration and Informal Spaces” and “Teaching and Learning Spaces”, and work began to bring the clever ideas created during the design process to life.

Project Outcomes
This is a brand-new purpose-built facility and Massey wanted to partner with a supplier who were innovative in their thinking and could provide design consultancy to enhance informal areas. Further to the brief, the partnership needed to deliver furniture solutions that were flexible to allow the spaces to reconfigure as the needs of the environment changed.

These spaces are designed with the needs of students, staff and visitors at the forefront and cater to meetings, socialising, waiting areas, conferencing, and event hosting.

The Innovation Centre comprises of 10,200m2 of floor space spread across 3½ levels. It houses teaching labs, research labs, teaching & learning spaces, meeting rooms for staff and PhD students, informal learning, collaborative and transitional spaces throughout the building.

Beyond its breath-taking first impression, it’s a sense of belonging that ultimately sets this building apart. Each area has been carefully considered to encourage creativity by providing flexible spaces and integrating a high level of design keeping accessibility and inclusivity front of mind.

Project Planning & Design

To deliver on our promises, we worked very closely with Massey and Athfields and  provided design, consultation, and support services throughout the duration of the project.

This involved the development of floor plans and specifications for informal/collaborative/teaching & learning spaces along with meeting room and locker layouts. Guidance in selection of product, specifications and finishes with carefully curated mood boards and sample selections for review, including product samples and mock ups.

Out of lockdown we were able to provide onsite product consultation and engagement with key stakeholders, staff and students to ensure the solutions we offered exceeded their expectations

We used layouts and diagrams to ensure fit and alignment with power and IT integration and to finesse customised product development and design.

We worked with industrial and interior design consultant, Heather Fowke, on the floor plans. Her attention to detail throughout this process ensured we delivered successful spaces for this project.

Project Management & Delivery
The project management phase was led by Paul Clucas and Rhia Spall from Europlan. Paul’s intimate knowledge of the project blended with Rhia’s Auckland based expertise created a very successful and not often seen collaboration. Both bringing sharp and agile skill sets to the process to deliver on our full range of project management services.

All aspects of delivery, assembly and installation were coordinated with the Massey project manager and the main contractor. We undertook regular site visits, measure ups and onsite project management to assure familiarity and proper overseeing of the delivery sequencing. The final stage of the process was the commissioning of all furniture to ensure full functionality and cleanliness prior to handover.

Paul and Rhia applied meticulous attention to detail to the project management, working with our operations team and logistics facility to carefully consolidate the staged deliveries, and provide flawless communication to adapt swiftly to ensure daily site changes were accommodated.
