The Sir Neil Walters (SNW) extension and renovation at Massey’s Albany, Auckland Campus, is a completed development to meet the growth in student numbers.
The works extend the footprint of the Sir Neil Waters Building from a previous floor size of 2484m2 to 4373m2. The extension provides additional teaching spaces on the first floor and work space to accommodate 79 staff and postgraduate students on the second floor.
The lower floor (Level 2) is dedicated to teaching and undergraduate student use. There are six new teaching spaces of varying size.
The new rooms encourage active learning experiences for students, including a series of 8 small break out rooms on the lower level. The large existing SNW Foyer and a new wide north-south corridor provide circulation and gathering spaces for students between classes.
Massey put out a tender to pre-approved panelists for learning space solutions for the SNW project. Europlan responded to the tender request with a comprehensive proposal and was successful in winning the Learning Spaces Tender for the SNW project with Massey.
The project needs are still evolving, and we are continuing to work with Massey’s project teams to ensure the space performs well now and into the future.
We addressed the specifications outlined in the tender documents and offered a full range of alternative solutions based on our experience in the tertiary sector creating dynamic modern learning spaces. To ensure we delivered a dynamic and cohesive project we provided full space planning and product design services. We worked closely with Massey on a product portfolio that would suit the needs of the new space and on the overall look and feel of the floor, finishes, fabrics, colours and design.
The new SNW building development will ensure a future focused facility that encourages creativity by providing organic spaces and integrating a high level of design. Multi-functional environments with robust furniture will ensure the spaces are accessible to all users. Staff and students have a choice where and how they work coupled with a sense of belonging that enables them to do their best work.
SNW Learning Spaces project was fully project manged by Europlan and required a fluid and nimble approach. Decisions were made and reviewed around technology and future proofing the space and along the way requirements changed which we adapted to. We were able to react quickly to variations and were based on site full time during installation, allowing us to address any remedial work immediately.
