An energetic social and event space for students in the heart of the campus
Europlan are a preferred supplier to the University of Canterbury (UC) and have been providing flexible learning solutions to the University for over 10 years.
Europlan’s Christchurch based team recently completed a fitout for the university Undercroft project. The Undercroft is the retail hub at the heart of the university campus, housing the copy centre, pharmacy, bank and ATM’s along with cafes and food outlets.
It’s been transformed from a basement and bike shelter to a busy and energetic social and event space for students. The development won the Architecture Now 2014 Interior Award in the civic category. It was viewed by the judges as a testament to the vibrancy and collaboration that can fuel, and seems to be driving the Christchurch reconstruction.

UC has had great feedback from staff and students and the space is in constant use.
Collaboration
For this project, the university selected two suppliers from the panel to work together to deliver the fitout. To meet the demands of the space, product needed to be robust, of a high quality and long lasting. It was critical that we delivered a cohesive fitout for the Undercroft to ensure it functioned as a multi-use space for staff and students.
Project meetings were held with university staff, a representative from the Student Association, Europlan and Bishop Interiors. Clear details were provided around colour palette and fabric selections. The focused and collective initial planning proved invaluable resulting in a seamless and unified fitout.
